Community Support & Access

Community Access under the NDIS refers to supports that help participants get out into the community, take part in everyday activities, and build social connections.

What is Community Access (NDIS)?

Community Access provides support worker assistance to help NDIS participants engage in community, social, recreational, and civic activities. The focus is on participation, inclusion, confidence, and independence outside the home.
This support is commonly funded under Core Supports – Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation.

What does Community Access include?

Supports are tailored to the participant’s interests, goals, and support needs.
Community Access may involve support with:

Attending appointments, shopping, or errands
Going to social activities, clubs, or hobbies
Participating in sports, fitness, or recreation
Visiting family and friends
Attending education, training, or volunteering
Using public transport or learning travel skills
Going to community events or groups
Building social and communication skills in real-life settings

What Community Access does not include

Community Access does not usually cover:

  • Therapy services (e.g. psychology, OT, speech therapy)
  • Entry fees, tickets, or activity costs (these are usually paid by the participant)
  • Medical or clinical care
  • Supports unrelated to the participant’s disability

Who is Community Access for?

Community Access is for NDIS participants who:

  • Need assistance to access or participate in the community
  • Want to build confidence, independence, or social skills
  • Experience barriers due to their disability
  • Have this support included as reasonable and necessary in their NDIS plan

Where does Community Access happen?

Community Access takes place:

  • In the local community
  • At social, recreational, educational, or cultural venues
  • Anywhere the participant chooses to go, as long as it aligns with their plan and goals

How is Community Access funded?

  • Funded through an NDIS plan under Core Supports
  • Can be self-managed, plan-managed, or NDIA-managed
  • Funding covers the support worker’s time, not personal expenses

Main goal of Community Access

The goal of Community Access is to:
Support participants to be active, connected, and included in their community, with greater choice and independence.
