Supported Independent Living (SIL)

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a type of support funded by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Australia. It helps people with disability live as independently as possible while still getting the help they need day-to-day.

What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

SIL provides paid support workers to help a person with everyday tasks while they live in a shared home or, in some cases, on their own. The focus is on building independence, skills, and choice, not just providing care.

What does SIL support include?

SIL funding usually covers help with daily living tasks, such as:

Personal care (showering, dressing, toileting)
Cooking and meal preparation
Cleaning and household tasks
Taking medication
Developing daily living and social skills
Overnight or 24/7 support (if needed)
Support to follow routines and stay safe at home

What SIL does not cover

SIL funding does not usually pay for:

  • Rent or mortgage
  • Utilities (electricity, water, internet)
  • Groceries
  • Personal expenses

Who is SIL for?

SIL is generally for NDIS participants who:

  • Need significant daily support
  • Want to live more independently
  • Often live with other people with disability (shared living), though some SIL arrangements are individual
  • Have SIL assessed as reasonable and necessary in their NDIS plan

Where does SIL happen?

SIL and SDA are different:
SDA = the building/home
SIL = the support inside the home

SIL can be provided in:

  • Shared houses (most common)
  • Units or apartments
  • Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) homes (if eligible)
  • Some private rentals

How is SIL funded?

An assessment (often a SIL quote or assessment) is required before approval.

  • SIL is funded through a participant’s NDIS plan
  • It’s usually listed under Core Supports
  • Funding is based on a roster of care and the number of support hours needed
