Community Nursing

Community Nursing under the NDIS refers to clinical nursing supports provided to participants in their home or community to help manage health needs related to their disability.

What is Community Nursing (NDIS)?

Community Nursing provides access to registered or enrolled nurses who deliver medical and clinical care outside of hospital settings. These supports help participants stay healthy, safe, and independent while living in the community.

What does Community Nursing include?

NDIS-funded community nursing may include:

Medication management and administration
Wound care and dressing changes
Catheter and continence care
PEG feeding and enteral nutrition support
Tracheostomy and respiratory care
Diabetes management and insulin administration
Seizure management support
Health assessments and monitoring
Support with complex health needs
Training and supervision of support workers for health-related tasks

All services are delivered according to clinical care plans and professional standards.

What Community Nursing does not cover

NDIS Community Nursing does not usually cover:

  • Medical treatments better funded by the public health system (Medicare or hospitals)
  • GP visits or specialist appointments
  • Acute or emergency care
  • Supports unrelated to the participant’s disability

Who is Community Nursing for?

Community Nursing is for NDIS participants who:

  • Have disability-related health needs
  • Require clinical or medical care from a qualified nurse
  • Need ongoing or intermittent nursing support to live safely in the community
  • Have Community Nursing assessed as reasonable and necessary in their NDIS plan

Where are Community Nursing services provided?

Community nursing can be delivered:

  • In the participant’s home
  • In supported accommodation (SIL, SDA, MTA)
  • In the community (as appropriate)

How is Community Nursing funded?

  • Funded through an NDIS plan (often under Core Supports – Assistance with Daily Living or Capacity Building, depending on the support)
  • Must be linked to the participant’s disability
  • Requires appropriate evidence and clinical justification

Main goal of Community Nursing

The goal of Community Nursing is to:
Support participants to manage their health needs safely, avoid hospital admissions, and live as independently as possible in their own home and community.
