Group Activities

Group Community Activities under the NDIS are supports that help participants take part in social, recreational, and skill-building activities with other people in the community.

What are Group Community Activities (NDIS)?

Group Community Activities provide structured or semi-structured activities delivered in a group setting, supported by staff. These activities are designed to promote social inclusion, confidence, independence, and community participation.
They are commonly funded under Core Supports – Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation.

What do Group Community Activities include?

Participants are supported to engage, interact, and build skills in a safe and inclusive environment.
Activities vary depending on interests and goals and may include:

Social groups and outings
Recreational activities (sports, art, music, fitness)
Life skills groups (cooking, budgeting, travel training)
Community outings (shopping centres, libraries, events)
Group volunteering activities
Day programs or centre-based group activities

What Group Community Activities do not include

Group Community Activities do not usually cover:

  • Therapy or clinical services
  • One-to-one support (this is usually Community Access or In-Home Support)
  • Entry fees, food, or personal expenses (unless stated otherwise)
  • Supports unrelated to the participant’s disability

Who are Group Community Activities for?

These supports are for NDIS participants who:

  • Want to socialise and connect with others
  • Enjoy or benefit from group settings
  • Are working on goals related to confidence, communication, or social skills
  • Have group supports assessed as reasonable and necessary in their NDIS plan

Where do Group Community Activities take place?

They may occur:

  • In community centres or hubs
  • At recreational or cultural venues
  • In local neighbourhood settings
  • During organised group outings

How are Group Community Activities funded?

Funding usually covers the support staff and program delivery, not individual expenses.

  • Funded through an NDIS plan under Core Supports
  • Often cost-effective due to shared support ratios
  • Can be self-managed or plan-managed (depending on provider)

Main goal of Group Community Activities

The goal is to:
Help participants build friendships, develop skills, and feel included and confident as part of their community.
